Design & Build

The original Ongaku changed the international perception of Japanese tube amplification when it appeared in 1989. Its single-ended 211 circuit was developed to preserve the tube’s natural linearity and low-distortion characteristics while delivering sufficient output for a broad range of high-efficiency loudspeakers.

Its output transformers use pure-silver windings arranged around a high-impedance 12-kohm, multilayer and multi-compartment structure. The transformers are wound by Kondo’s technicians and use insulation selected specifically for the amplifier’s high operating voltages.

The copper chassis, silver-foil capacitors and hand-routed signal wiring form a mechanically and electrically coherent structure.

Silver Signal Path

Kondo’s handmade capacitors use pure-silver foil electrodes with vibration-control construction. Internal SSW wiring places natural silk around the pure-silver conductors, providing insulation and mechanical damping before the outer PVC jacket is applied.

System Pairing

Ongaku combines power amplification with input selection, allowing four single-ended analogue sources to be connected directly. It may therefore serve as the centre of a minimalist system or be paired with a dedicated Kondo preamplifier.

Its 27-watt output is best matched with loudspeakers of suitable sensitivity and a stable 8-ohm impedance characteristic.
